Skin Discoloration
Skin discoloration is characterized by irregular patches of skin with changes to the skin’s color. It is a common problem with a variety of possible causes, but which usually occurs due to changes in melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color.
It may occur as a result of many ailments, conditions and injuries, for example, scar tissue from injuries or burns often appears a different color to the surrounding skin. Certain infections can cause localized changes to skin color, as can some autoimmune diseases and allergies. Skin cancer is another common cause of skin discoloration.
Treatment for skin discoloration depends on the underlying cause, but may involve using topical treatments. Drug classes commonly used to treat skin discoloration include depigmenting agents and topical retinoids for use for acne.
