Sleep Apnea

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder characterized by pauses in breathing or periods in which breathing is shallow while sleeping. There are three forms of sleep apnea: obstructive, central and complex sleep apnea syndrome.

Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common form and it occurs due to a relaxation of the muscles in the throat. Central sleep apnea occurs due when the brain sends incorrect signals to the muscles responsible for controlling breathing. Complex sleep apnea syndrome, also known as treatment-emergent central sleep apnea, occurs when a patient experiences both of the other forms.

Loud snoring is the most common symptom, particularly among those who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea. Other symptoms include periodic cessation of breathing, waking abruptly and short of breath, headaches in the morning, waking with a dry mouth or a sore throat, problems sleeping, attention issues, and irritability.

Common risk factors for sleep apnea include obesity, a narrow airway, a wide neck, being male, being an older adult, smoking, family history of the condition, nasal congestion, smoking, and use of alcohol or sedatives.

Treatment of sleep apnea may involve the use of CPAP machine while sleeping, surgery, and medication. Drug classes used to treat sleep apnea are respiratory stimulants, narcolepsy agents, and ADHD agents, stimulants, and other psychostimulants.
