Soft tissue sarcoma is a rare form of cancerous tumor originating in the body’s soft tissues, such as fat, muscle, blood vessels, nerves, tendons and the lining of the joints. While the precise cause of soft tissue sarcoma is unclear, known risk factors include inherited syndromes, such as Werner syndrome or tuberculosis sclerosis; exposure to dangerous chemicals; and exposure to radiation.
There are more than 50 varieties of soft tissue sarcoma exist, some of which are more common in children than adults and vice-versa. Around 13,000 new cases of soft tissue sarcoma are diagnosed each year, according to estimates from the American Cancer Society.
Symptoms of soft tissue sarcoma may be difficult to spot, particularly in the early stages, but signs include the appearance of a lump or swelling. If the tumor puts pressure on nerves or muscles, a soft tissue sarcoma may be painful.
Treatment options for soft tissue sarcoma include radiation therapy, chemotherapy, surgery and medication. Drug classes used to treat this form of cancer are protein kinase inhibitors, actinomycines, other antineoplastic agents, antineoplastic monoclonal antibodies, and anthracyclines.
