Typhoid Fever
Typhoid is a bacterial disease spread through contaminated food and water or via contact with an infected person. Since vaccinations for the disease were developed, typhoid has become relatively rare in developed countries, with only around 5,700 cases each year in the United States.
Symptoms of typhoid include fever, headaches, weakness, fatigue, sweating, a dry cough, loss of appetite, weight loss, abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, rash, and muscle aches. In the later stages of the disease, patients can become delirious and exhausted.
Typhoid and paratyphoid vaccines are available and are recommended for those traveling to certain countries. Hospitalization is usually necessary for people who do contract typhoid. Treatment involves staying hydrated, surgery and medication in the form of antibiotics. Drug classes used to treat cases of typhoid include tetracycline antibiotics, and fluoroquinolone antibiotics.
