Vertigo
Vertigo is a common problem characterized by dizziness and a lack of balance, often because of a feeling of spinning, or as if the surrounding environment is spinning. It is often caused by vestibular (inner ear) disorders or dysfunction, for example, Ménière’s disease or benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPVV). An estimated one-third of all cases of vertigo and dizziness symptoms are caused by vestibular problems.
Symptoms of vertigo often include feelings of spinning, tilting, swaying or being otherwise off-balance. It is often triggered or worsened by a change in the position of the head. Other symptoms may include vomiting, nausea, headaches, sweating, hearing loss, ringing in the ears, blurred vision, and abnormal or jerky eye movements.
Treatment of vertigo will focus on identifying the cause of the condition and treating this. However, in many cases, the condition will fade without treatment. When treatment is necessary, options include vestibular rehabilitation, surgery, and medication. Antivertigo products such as meclizine may also be prescribed.
