Vitamin B12, also called cobalamin, is a vitamin that plays an essential role in the formation of red blood cells, cell metabolism, nerve function and DNA production. It is found naturally in a variety of foodstuffs, including meat, fish, dairy and fortified foods.

People following a vegetarian or vegan diet may be more likely to develop a vitamin B12 deficiency. Other risk factors include old age, certain bowel surgeries, long-term use of antacids for heartburn, and medication such as the diabetes drug metformin.

Symptoms of a vitamin B12 deficiency include fatigue, weakness, numbness, paleness, lightheadedness, a rapid heartbeat, diarrhea, constipation, and depression. In severe cases, it can lead to anemia and neurologic dysfunction.

Treatment of a vitamin B12 deficiency usually involves taking supplements or vitamin B12 injections. Drug classes and supplements commonly used to treat a vitamin B12 deficiency are cyanocobalamin/vitamin B12 and analog supplements and certain multivitamins.
