Vitamin D deficiency occurs when the level of vitamin D in the body is insufficient and can result in bone and muscle problems and other complications. Vitamin D serves numerous functions in the body, playing a part in insulin resistance, immune function, controlling blood pressure, and the proper processing of calcium. More than 40 percent of Americans are estimated to be deficient in vitamin D.
Conditions associated with a vitamin D deficiency include rickets, osteoporosis, increased risk of cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Research also suggests vitamin D plays a role in prevention and treatment of several common conditions, including diabetes type 1, diabetes type 2, hypertension, and multiple sclerosis.
Among the symptoms of vitamin D deficiency are a poor immune function, fatigue or tiredness, bone or back pain, depression, wounds not healing properly, low bone density, hair loss, and muscle pain. Risk factors for vitamin D deficiency include having darker skin, old age, obesity, poor diet or certain dietary restrictions, and not getting enough sunlight.
Vitamin D deficiency is normally easily treated with supplements or by increasing vitamin D in the diet. Drug classes commonly used to treat vitamin D deficiency are vitamin D supplements and bulk agents for compounding.
