Valproic acid is a broad-spectrum anticonvulsant drug used to treat various seizure disorders. Valproic acid affects the chemicals in the body that may be responsible for causing seizures. It can be used in conjunction with other seizure medications, and to treat manic episodes caused by bipolar disorder. In some cases, it can be used to treat migraines. It is important not to take Valproic acid if you are pregnant, as it may cause harm to your unborn baby. Valproic acid is only available with a prescription and is most commonly known as the brand names Stavzor, Depakote or Depacon.
