Bipolar disorder, formerly known as manic depression, is a common psychological condition affecting mood. Symptoms include severe mood swings, with periods of mania and hyperactivity, and periods of depression and lethargy. These extremes can last for weeks or longer and patients with bipolar disorder often struggle to find a normal balance with their moods.
Men and women of all ages may be affected by manic depression, but it develops more often in young adults. Bipolar disorder is sometimes mistaken for ADHD in younger patients. Bipolar adults are more prone to drug or alcohol dependency. Signs of mania include increased activity, racing thoughts, and rapid speech. Indicators of depression include anxiety, excessive feelings of guilt or worthlessness, loss of interest in pleasurable activities and difficulty concentrating.
Psychological treatment, such as talk therapy, is usually part of treatment to help patients cope with depression and learn how to live with the disorder. Medication may also be prescribed to prevent episodes of mania and depression, or control them when they do occur. Medical and psychological professionals can help patients identify the signs of an episode and provide advice on appropriate lifestyle adjustments, for example, getting more exercise, dietary improvements, and getting plenty of sleep.
Commonly prescribed drug classes used to treat bipolar disorder include multi-acting receptor-targeted antipsychotics (MARTA), serotonin-dopamine antagonist (SDA) antipsychotics, antidepressant augmentation drugs, mood stabilizers, first generation antipsychotics, and partial dopamine receptor agonist antipsychotics.
