First Generation Antipsychotics
First generation antipsychotics, also known as typical antipsychotics, are drugs used primarily for the treatment of schizophrenia, acute mania and other related psychotic disorders. They may also be used to treat the symptoms of bipolar disorder, dementia, and to relieve severe nausea and vomiting. First generation antipsychotics are often less expensive than newer generations of antipsychotics. Commonly prescribed first generation antipsychotics include Compro (prochlorperazine), Haldol (haloperidol), chlorpromazine and perphenazine.
Drugs classified as First Generation Antipsychotics are frequently used to treat the following conditions:
- attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
- psychosis
- schizophrenia
- Tourette's syndrome
- nausea
- agitation
- Bipolar Disorder
- generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)
