Astringents
Astrignents are a class of dermatological drug that cause the skin cells or mucus membrane to contract or shrink. When applied to the skin (topically) they harden and protect the skin when dried. Astringents help to reduce bleeding from minor abrasions such as grazes and are also used to relieve skin irritations resulting from minor cuts, acne, allergies, eczema and insect bites. Astringents can also be used in throat lozenges, creams, lotions and mouthwashes. Witch hazel is the most common ingredient and is available without a prescription.
