Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids, also known as piles, are a common condition occurring when veins in the lower rectum and anus become inflamed and swollen. Hemorrhoids are common in both men and women and affect about one in 20 people in the United States.

There are three varieties of hemorrhoids; internal hemorrhoids, which lie inside the rectum; external hemorrhoids, which appear under the skin around the anus; and thrombosed hemorrhoids, which occur when blood pools and clots in an external hemorrhoid, resulting in pain, swelling and a lump.

Possible causes of hemorrhoids include straining during bowel movements, chronic constipation, chronic diarrhea, obesity, a low-fiber diet, and pregnancy. Symptoms of hemorrhoids include painless bleeding during bowel movements, pain or discomfort in the anal region, swelling around the anus, and sensitive or painful lumps near the anus.

Hemorrhoid treatments usually involve using topical medication, such as creams and ointments. Drug classes often prescribed to treat hemorrhoids are astringents, topical anti-hemorrhoidals with corticosteroids, and other corticosteroid combinations.
