Benzodiazepines are used as a sedative and to treat a number of conditions, such as insomnia, anxiety, epilepsy, seizures, alcohol withdrawal symptoms and Lennox Gastaut Syndrome. They are among the most commonly prescribed drugs in the United States. Benzodiazepines work by altering the effect of a neurotransmitter in the brain, causing muscles to relax and a slowing of the central nervous system.
