Insomnia is a sleep disorder typified by problems falling and/or remaining asleep. Patients with insomnia often; struggle getting back to sleep when they wake in the night; feel tired upon waking; and wake too early. There are two forms, primary and secondary insomnia. With primary insomnia, the condition is not directly associated with other health issues, unlike the secondary variety in which sleeplessness caused by another factor, such as depression, asthma, pain, medication or arthritis.
Treatment usually includes lifestyle changes such as improving sleeping habits, getting more exercise and behavioral therapy. Medication is also prescribed to treat insomnia, including benzodiazepines such as Restoril (temazepam) and Ambien (zolpidem). Other prescription drug classes include melatonin agonists, barbiturates, GABA agonists and tricyclic antidepressants. Some antihistamines provide an over-the-counter medication option.
