Centrally Acting Alpha Agonists
Centrally acting alpha agonists are used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure), symptoms of menopause, drug or alcohol withdrawal symptoms, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and spasticity. They function by preventing the brain from sending signals to the nervous system to increase heart rate, relieving the symptoms of withdrawal and controlling impulsive behavior. Commonly prescribed examples of centrally acting alpha agonists include Catapres (clonidine), Tenex (guanfacine), Zanaflex (tizanidine) and Intuniv (guanfacine er).
