Alcohol Addiction

Alcohol Addiction

Alcohol addiction is a mental or physical dependency on alcohol. It can lead to other health problems, such as cirrhosis of the liver and heart problems, as well as social and relationship difficulties.

Signs of alcohol addiction include hiding alcohol use, missing social or work commitments and having to drink more for the desired effect. Experiencing withdrawal symptoms such as nausea, sweating, racing heart, trouble sleeping, and restlessness may also be signs of alcohol addiction.

It is usually treated with therapy and support programs to help patients stop drinking. However, medication and drug treatments are also available. Commonly used drug classes to help with alcohol addiction include specific drugs used in alcohol dependence and occasionally centrally acting alpha agonists.
