MAOI Antidepressants
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAO inhibitors or MAOIs) are used to treat depression, anxiety, and Parkinson's disease. They work by blocking monoamine oxidase enzymes, which break down neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine in the brain, low levels of which have been linked with depression. MAOIs are often used when other antidepressants have proved ineffective. Commonly prescribed MAOIs include Nardil (phenelzine), Marlin (isocarboxazid), Emsam (selegiline) and Parnate (tranylcypromine).
