Depression or major depressive disorder is one of the most common disorders in the United States, affecting more than 16 million adults, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Symptoms of depression include: feelings of hopelessness, guilt, a loss of interest in hobbies, reduced sex drive, a decreased or increased appetite, restlessness, suicidal thoughts, and persistent sadness or anxiety. Many people experience one or more of these on occasion, but when a patient exhibits a number of them together or constantly, they may be diagnosed with major depressive disorder.
Various treatments for depression are available, ranging from lifestyle and behavioral changes and therapy to medication. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as Zoloft (sertraline), Prozac (fluoxetine), Celexa (citalopram) are often used to treat depression. Other drugs prescribed may include: serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), for example Pristiq (desvenlafaxine), tricyclic antidepressants, MAOIs and atypical antidepressants.
