Opioid agonists are prescribed to patients with opioid dependence and pain. Agonists and partial agonists act like opiates but are safer and less addictive, enabling patients to reduce dependency and dulling symptoms of withdrawal. Opioid agonists often prescribed to treat patients with dependencies include: Methadone, Suboxone Film (buprenorphine/naloxone) and Buprenex (buprenorphine).
