Pain

Pain

Pain is a symptom of many different underlying conditions or the result of injury or trauma. It is one of the most common reasons for visiting a physician. Pain is categorized according to specific characteristics, such as the affected area of the body, duration, pattern of occurrence, intensity and cause.

As well as regionalized pain, for example, that which affects a limb or other body part, patients may experience neuropathic pain caused by damage or disease affecting the nervous system. Chronic pain is long-lasting or persistent and is commonly experienced by patients with certain underlying conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, peripheral neuropathy or idiopathic pain, whereas acute pain lasts a shorter period of time, for example, that caused by injury.

Treatment of pain depends on the underlying cause of the symptoms but may include physical therapy, surgery or medication. In the majority of cases, analgesics and pain-relieving medication are prescribed. Drug classes commonly prescribed to treat pain include opioid agonoist and other drug combinations, analgesics with and without antipyretic activity, topical local anesthetics, amide local anesthetics, nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs/NSAIDs, and opioid agonists.
