Other General Anesthetics
General anesthetics are normally used to produce a loss of consciousness before and during surgery. Anesthetics are given by inhalation, intravenously and some can be given rectally to help produce sleep before surgery. However, for certain minor procedures and for obstetrics (labor and delivery) an anesthetic may be given in a gas form in small amounts to relieve pain without causing unconsciousness. These anesthetics may also be used for procedures in a doctor’s or dentist’s office. Propofol is used in adult patients in intensive care units to cause unconsciousness, this may allow the patient to withstand the stress of being in intensive care and help the patient cooperate when a machine must be used to assist with breathing. Thiopental can also be used to control seizures caused by certain medicines or disorders. Thiopental reduces the pressure on the brain in certain conditions. General anesthetics are only administered by a doctor, dentist or anesthesiologist who will closely monitor you.
