Rifamycin Antibiotics
Rifamycin antibiotics are used to treat skin infections, tuberculosis, diarrhea, hepatic encephalopathy, meningitis, and irritable bowel syndrome. They work by binding to and killing the bacteria causing the infection. These drugs are also bacteriocidal (they kill bacteria), so are considered a highly effective treatment for tuberculosis. Commonly prescribed rifamycin antibiotics include Mycobutin (rifabutin), Xifaxan (rifaximin), and Rifadin (rifampin).
