Triphasic Contraceptives

Triphasic contraceptives are a form of birth control containing three different doses of the hormones progestin and estrogen. They prevent ovulation and pregnancy and in some cases may be used to treat acne in female patients. Triphasic contraceptives work by gradually increasing the dose of estrogen and in some cases also increase the progesterone dose. Packs usually contain 21 pills, with a different hormone combination every seven days. Commonly prescribed triphasic contraceptives include Tri-Sprintec (inert; norgestimate, ethinyl estradiol), Trivora-28 (inert; levonorgestrel, ethinyl estradiol) and TriNessa (inert; norgestimate, ethinyl estradiol).
