Birth control is any method used to avoid an unwanted pregnancy. Commonly used birth control methods include condoms; birth control pills; implants; IUDs and vasectomies. Birth control medication may also be used to treat acne and hormonal imbalances.
Hormonal birth control, such as pills or implants prevent the release of eggs so they cannot be fertilized by sperm, but it does not prevent against STDs. Barrier birth control, such as condoms, diaphragms and cervical caps or shields, prevent pregnancy too, but also provide protection against STDs.
Birth control medication is usually in pill form and contains a hormone or combination of hormones to prevent the egg from leaving the ovaries. It may also affect cervical mucus and the uterine lining, making fertilization less likely. Birth control treatment in the form of patches and injections are also available.
Commonly used birth control include monophasic contraceptives, biphasic contraceptives, triphasic contraceptives, extended cycle contraceptives, progestogen only contraceptives and emergency contraceptives and abortifacients.
