Overview

Diabetes is serious, yet common, medical condition that affects more than 37 million in the U.S., the equivalent of more than 1 in 10 Americans. The majority of cases are type 2 diabetes, a condition in which the body cannot produce or is unable to correctly use insulin. Furthermore, an estimated 96 million people over the age of 18 have prediabetes, or a higher than normal blood sugar level, which places them at a high risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Left untreated, diabetes can lead to many further health complications, so it is important to work with your healthcare provider(s) and follow a treatment and diabetes management plan.

Fortunately, there are many treatment options and diabetes medications to help manage and control this condition. These include prescription medications such as insulin, which is used to control blood sugar, and using medical devices such as blood glucose monitors. Physicians and healthcare providers may also recommend certain lifestyle changes, for example dietary changes, weight loss and exercise.
