Health insurance helps most Americans pay for medical treatments and their prescription medication. Healthcare can be expensive and insurance offers some protection should you require treatment. In most cases, you pay a premium each month and a proportion of the cost of your treatment. This varies depending on the level of cover and the plan you have selected.
More than 9 out of 10 people have either public or private health insurance to cover at least some of their expenses should they need to pay for treatment or prescription drugs. However, many people still need to pay a significant amount on healthcare and medication, despite having health coverage. While less than 10% of people are “uninsured” a significant proportion are “underinsured”, meaning they are on high-deductible plans with high out-of-pocket expenses.
Coverage can be bought or provide by:
- A government or state-run health insurance marketplace
- Your employer
- Private insurance companies
- Medicare - a federal health insurance for adults over 65 years of age and younger people with disabilities or certain health conditions
- Medicaid - free or low-cost health insurance, available for low-income families, children, pregnant women, people with disabilities and older adults.
- Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) - state-run health insurance provided for children aged 18 and younger
