PCOS
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), also known as Stein-Leventhal syndrome, is a hormonal disorder affecting women. It is caused by an excess of male hormones, creating problems with the ovaries and leading to symptoms such as irregular periods, ovarian cysts, acne and infertility. PCOS affects up to one in ten women of childbearing age and is linked to obesity and diabetes type 2.
Treatment of PCOS may involve lifestyle changes, such as alterations to diet and an increase in exercise. Medication is also used in treatment of PCOS, including diabetes treatments such as thiazolidinedione/glitazone antidiabetics and fertility drugs such as selective estrogen receptor modulators/SERMS.
