Allergic conjunctivitis is inflammation of the eyed caused by an allergic reaction. It is particularly common during hay fever season and is often caused by a reaction to allergens like mold spores, dust or pollen.
Symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis include itchy, inflamed and irritated eyes. Eyes often become puffy, red and watery.
In most cases, over-the-counter medication can be successfully used to alleviate the symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis. Commonly used drug classes include NSAIDs to reduce swelling, antihistamines to counter the allergic reaction, medicated eye drops, corticosteroids, and ocular anti-allergics, mast cell stabilizers.
