Asthma

Asthma is a common condition in which airways swell becoming narrower and leading to difficulties breathing. Symptoms include wheezing, coughing, tightness in the chest and shortness of breath. One in twelve people in the US are afflicted with asthma at some point in their lives, according to figures from the CDC.

Asthma is a chronic condition with a number of possible causes and triggers. Allergies to dust, pet hair or pollen or a respiratory infection are among these. Patients diagnosed with asthma should avoid potential triggers where possible.

Many different medications are used to treat asthma, the most common of which are in inhaler form. Different inhalers are available, including preventative and quick relief varieties. Drugs used to treat asthma include: beta agonist inhalers such as Ventolin, mast cell stabilizers, leukotriene receptor antagonists, methylxanthines, 5-lipoxygenase inhibitors, and corticosteroids such as prednisone.
