Essential Tremor
Essential tremor is a neurological disorder that may affect almost any part of the body, but which is most commonly experienced in the hands. It is characterized by involuntary and rhythmic shaking and usually worsens over time. Essential tremor is more common in people over 40 years of age and those with a particular genetic mutation. It is often mistaken for Parkinson's disease.
Symptoms of essential tremor include tremors that begin gradually, usually on one side of the body, and worsen with movement. Symptoms may be exacerbated by fatigue, emotional stress, extreme temperatures, and caffeine.
Treatment of essential tremor may involve simple lifestyle changes, such as minimizing stress and trying meditation. Surgery and medication such as anticonvulsants, miscellaneous, anxiolytics, benzodiazepines, and beta blockers may also be recommended by a physician.
