Anxiolytics, Benzodiazepines
Anxiolytics are fast-acting medications used to treat anxiety. They work by targeting key chemical messengers in the brain and are used to treat symptoms of anxiety disorders and social disorders. Benzodiazepines are also used as sedation and to treat a variety of other conditions, such as alcohol addiction, insomnia, epilepsy and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. They are among the most commonly prescribed anxiolytics and include: Xanax (alprazolam), Klonopin (clonazepam), Valium (diazepam) and Ativan (lorazepam).
