Herpes

Genital herpes is one of the most prevalent sexually transmitted diseases in the United States. It is often symptomless or manifests very mild symptoms, the result of which is that many patients are unaware they have the disease. It is caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV) and is transmitted through sexual contact.

Many people manifest no symptoms, but in some cases patients may find small blisters and sores appear in the affected area. These may be accompanied by flu-like symptoms, fever and swollen lymph nodes.

Currently, there is no cure for genital herpes, but symptoms can be controlled and treatment can reduce the chance patients will infect others. Among the medication used to treat genital herpes are systemic antivirals and topical corticosteroids.
