Hyperthyroidism

Hyperthyroidism

Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland is overactive, producing excessive quantities of the hormones affecting the metabolism. It is more common in women, but anyone may develop the condition. One of the most common causes of hyperthyroidism is the autoimmune disorder Graves disease.

Symptoms may include tiredness, an increased appetite, heat sensitive, weight loss, sensitivity to heat and sweating.  Left untreated, hyperthyroidism may result in heart disorders, brittle bones and pregnancy problems.

Thyroid preperations such as Synthroid (levothyroxine sodium) or Tirosint (levothyroxine sodium) may be prescribed to treat hyperthyroidism. Surgery and radiation therapy are other treatment options.
