Lung cancer first appears in the lungs and can spread to other parts of the body if left untreated. Cancer from elsewhere in the body may also spread to the lungs. It is the second most common form of cancer in the US, according to the American Cancer Society. Smoking is the primary cause of the condition, although it may appear in patients without a history of smoking.
Symptoms of lung cancer include coughing up blood, fatigue, wheezing, weight loss, chest pains and breathing difficulties. Early stages of the disease may be symptomless, so it is important to consult a physician should any of the possible symptoms of lung cancer manifest.
Radiation and chemotherapy are common treatments for lung cancer. In some cases, surgical intervention to remove the tumor and prevent it spreading may be recommended. Targeted drug therapy is also used to treat lung cancer. Medication prescribed to lung cancer patients may include kinase inhibitors, antifolates, VEGF antibodies, EGFR inhibitors and topoisomerase inhibitors.
