Metabolic Bone Disorders
Metabolic bone disorders is an umbrella term referring to a number of diseases that cause abnormalities in the bones. They may be inherited diseases, for example, hereditary hypophosphatemia (low phosphate levels in the blood), or the result of abnormal levels of minerals and vitamins, such as calcium, phosphorus or vitamin D.
Among the most common metabolic bone disorders are osteoporosis, osteomalacia or rickets, and Paget's disease. Symptoms of a metabolic bone disorder will depend on the condition, as will the treatment options.
Drug classes commonly used to treat metabolic bone disorders include vitamin and mineral supplements, such as vitamin D supplements, calcium supplements, and potassium supplements. Medication to replace or assist the enzymes responsible for production or processing of minerals may also be prescribed. Mineral binding agents may be prescribed in cases where there is an excess of minerals in the body.
