Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition affecting the brain and spinal cord, damaging the myelin, or protective covering, of the nerves. This interferes with communication between the brain and spinal cord and other parts of the body and can lead to irreparable nerve deterioration.

Symptoms of MS vary depending on the location of the affected nerve fibers, but they may include: lack of coordination, unsteady gait, fatigue, dizziness, pain or tingling sensations, weakness or numbness of limbs, some loss of vision or pain during eye movement.

Treatment of MS focuses on managing the symptoms and preventing further progression of the condition. Doctors may also suggest medication to alleviate symptoms such as pain, depression or fatigue. Physical therapy to increase mobility, reduce pain and alleviate other symptoms of MS may also be recommended.

A variety of medications are used to treat multiple sclerosis. Commonly prescribed MS drugs include sphingosine 1-phosphate receptor modulators and interferon betas.
