Salmonella
Salmonella is a bacterial infection that usually develops following the consumption of contaminated foodstuffs. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates around one million people get salmonella each year, resulting in as many as 19,000 hospitalizations. Symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal cramps that last for between 12 and 72 hours, chills, headaches, vomiting, and fever.
Salmonella is usually treated with antibiotics such as macrolide antibiotics a to kill the bacteria at the root of the problem and anti-diarrheals such as Imodium A-d (loperamide).
