Expectorants
Expectorants increase bronchial secretions and are used to treat chesty and phlegmy coughs, typically those experienced by patients with a common cold. They work by breaking up mucus in the lungs, making it easier to cough it up out of the airway and lungs. Commonly prescribed expectorants include Pima (potassium iodide), Mucinex (guaifenesin) and Altarussin (guaifenesin).
