Mixed Opiate Agonist-Antagonist
Mixed opiate agonist-antagonists are used to treat pain and opioid dependence. They reduce withdrawal symptoms and work on the pain sensors to reduce pain. Agonist-antagonists are drugs containing the pharmacological properties of both agonists and antagonists. In the case of opiate agonist-antagonists, they bind to the opioid receptors to compete with opiates and other substances, blocking the binding of drugs to the receptors or producing a smaller effect than that of full agonists. Commonly prescribed mixed opiate agonist-antagonists include Suboxone Film (buprenorphine, naloxone) and Butrans (buprenorphine).
Drugs classified as Mixed Opiate Agonist-Antagonist are frequently used to treat the following conditions:
- Pain
