Opioid Dependence

Opioid Dependence

Opioid dependence occurs when a person is has a psychological and physiological addiction to opioids, either in the form of prescription medication or illegal drugs, such as heroin. In 2016, around two million Americans were addicted to prescription opioids, according to figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Opioids are analgesics and are an important treatment option for a range of medical conditions. However, they can be highly addictive and prone to misuse or abuse. When taken repeatedly over time, the body builds resistance to the effects as it slows endorphin production, which means a larger dose of opioids is needed for the same effect.

Symptoms of opioid dependence include mental health issues such as depression, anxiety and paranoia; and physiological symptoms, such as tremors, itching, sweating, chills, and nausea.

If you are concerned you are dependent on opioids, it is important to seek medical help rather than simply stopping, as rapid withdrawal may be dangerous. Treatment of opioid dependence involves counseling and therapy as well as medication to reduce dependence. As well as drugs used in opioid dependence, other drug classes used to treat the condition are mixed opiate agonist-antagonist and opioid agonists.
