Potassium-Sparing and Thiazide Diuretic Combinations

Potassium-sparing and thiazide diuretic combinations are used to treat heart failure, hypertension (high blood pressure), nephrotic syndrome and edema. They work by increasing the volume of urine produced by encouraging the excretion of salt and water from the kidneys. Thiazide diuretics inhibit reabsorption of sodium. Potassium-sparing diuretics prevent excessive loss of potassium, and when used in combination with thiazide diuretics they reduce edema caused by retention of salt and water. Commonly prescribed examples of potassium-sparing and thiazide diuretic combinations include Maxzide (triamterene, hydrochlorothiazide) and Dyazide (diazide).
