Hypokalemia

Hypokalemia

Hypokalemia is a condition in which the bloodstream has lower than normal levels of potassium. Potassium is important in carrying electrical signals to cells in the body and is vital to proper function and regulation of muscle activity, the heart, and nerve cells.

There are a number of possible causes of hypokalemia and potassium loss in the body, including chronic kidney disease, diabetic ketoacidosis, diarrhea, primary aldosteronism, excessive sweating, or folate deficiency. Excessive use of alcohol or laxatives may also lead to hypokalemia.

Symptoms of hypokalemia may include fatigue, weakness, muscle cramps, and constipation. In severe cases, it may also lead to arrhythmia and is particularly problematic for patients with underlying heart conditions.

Treatment of hypokalemia usually involves addressing the underlying cause of the condition. Medication, for example, potassium supplements and aldosterone antagonists, may also be prescribed.
