Diarrhea

Diarrhea

Diarrhea is characterized by loose, watery stools and more frequent bowel movements. Other symptoms may include weakness, dehydration, and fatigue.

Acute diarrhea generally lasts between two days and two weeks and is usually caused by an infection by a virus, bacteria or parasite. Chronic diarrhea typically lasts more than four weeks and may indicate a serious underlying condition, such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Treatment of diarrhea involves drinking plenty of fluids, avoiding certain triggers and foods, and medication. Medication may be used to alleviate the symptoms and treat the underlying cause. Drug classes commonly used to treat diarrhea are sulfonamide and trimethoprim antibiotic combinations, aAnaerobicides, intestinal antibiotics, agents for amoebiasis and other protozoal diseases, and anti-diarrheals, such as Imodium (loperamide).
