Sulfonamide and Trimethoprim Antibiotic Combinations
Sulfonamide and trimethoprim antibiotic combinations are used to treat or prevent a range of bacterial infections. They may be used to treat patients with urinary tract infections, lower respiratory tract infections, pneumonia, and diarrhea. These medications contain a combination of two antibiotics: a sulfonamide such as sulfamethoxazole; and a trimethoprim. Sulfonamide and trimethoprim antibiotic combinations work by killing the bacteria causing the infection. Commonly prescribed sulfonamide and trimethoprim antibiotic combinations include Bactrim Ds (sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim) and Sulfatrim (sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim).
