Ear infections usually occur in the middle ear and are most often caused by bacterial or viral infections. Seasonal factors, such as cold weather and allergies may also increase the likelihood of an ear infection developing. Ear infections are more common in children than adults.
Symptoms of ear infections are ear pain, drainage of fluid from the ear and diminished hearing. Frequent or long-term ear infections may cause hearing problems and other serious complications.
Medication, such as ear drops or antibiotics, may be prescribed to treat ear infections and alleviate the symptoms. Drug classes commonly used to treat ear infections are otic corticosteroid/anti-infective combinations, otic anti-infectives, and otic corticosteroid/anti-infective combinations. Immunizations, for example, pneumococcal vaccines, may help prevent further infections.
Antibiotic treatment options include penicillinase-sensitive penicillin antibiotics, penicillin and beta-lactamase inhibitor combination antibiotics, macrolide antibiotics, 1st generation cephalosporin antibiotics, sulfonamide and trimethoprim antibiotic combinations, fluoroquinolone antibiotics, trimethoprim and derivative antibiotics, 3rd generation cephalosporin antibiotics, 2nd generation cephalosporin and cephamycin antibiotics, and combinations of corticosteroids with antibacterials.
