Penicillin and Beta-Lactamase Inhibitor Combination Antibiotics
Penicillin and beta-lactamase inhibitor combination antibiotics are used to treat pneumonia and a range of other infections, including urinary tract, ear, sinus and lower respiratory infections. The medication contains the antibiotic penicillin, which prevents the growth of bacteria, and a beta-lactamase inhibitor, which prevent bacterial degradation of the beta-lactam antibiotics. This increases the range of bacteria against which the drugs are effective. Commonly prescribed penicillin and beta-lactamase inhibitor combination antibiotics include Augmentin (amoxicillin and potassium clavulanate) and Zosyn (piperacillin and tazobactam).
