Federal poverty level (FPL)
The federal poverty level (FPL) is a measure of household income used to determine whether you are eligible for certain savings and discounts on health insurance, including the Marketplace, Medicaid, and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) coverage.
The FPL is set by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). In 2022, the FPL for individuals was $12,880, with incremental increases depending on family size.
To qualify for premium tax credits giving you lower monthly premiums on Marketplace insurance plans, your income must be between 100 percent and 400 percent of the FPL.
