Cold Sores

Cold Sores

Cold sores are a viral infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). They can appear anywhere on the body. They are most commonly found around the mouth and lips but may also appear in the genital region. Cold sores are small painful blisters that may ooze and then crust over. They usually last for between seven and ten days.

Over-the-counter treatments are available for cold sores, but in more serious cases prescription medication may be required. Common drug classes used to treat cold sores are systemic antivirals, oral B2-stimulants, and topical antivirals.
