Diabetic nephropathy, also called diabetic kidney disease, is a serious kidney condition associated with diabetes type 1 and type 2 diabetes. It is the leading cause of kidney failure and is developed by around one-third of patients with diabetes. Diabetic nephropathy occurs when nephron damage causes the kidneys to lose their ability to filter blood.
Early stage diabetic nephropathy is often asymptomatic, but as kidney functions worsen symptoms may start to manifest. Symptoms of diabetic nephropathy include swelling of the hands, feet, and face; difficulty sleeping; loss of appetite; nausea; weakness; itching and dry skin; and headaches.
Treatment of diabetic nephropathy usually involves maintaining low blood pressure and cholesterol levels. This may be achieved through lifestyle changes, such as getting more exercise and eating healthily, or with medication. Drug classes commonly prescribed to treat diabetic nephropathy include angiotensin-ii receptor blockers/ARBs and angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors/ACEIs.
