Graves' Disease

Graves' Disease

Graves' disease is rare immune system disorder that causes hyperthyroidism (an overproduction of thyroid hormones) and may also affect the eyes and skin. Around one-third of patients with Graves' disease also develop Graves' ophthalmopathy, which affects the muscles and tissues around the eyes.  It may also cause thick, red skin to form on the shins or top of the feet - a condition called Graves' dermopathy.

Symptoms of Graves' disease include weight loss, a tremor in the hands or fingers, anxiety, irritability, goiter, hair loss, intolerance to heat, changes to the menstrual cycle, erectile dysfunction, fatigue, heart palpitations, and arrhythmia.

Treatment of Graves' disease focuses on preventing the overproduction of hormones by the thyroid and alleviating the symptoms. Drug classes prescribed to treat Graves' disease include anti-thyroid preparations, such as Tapazole (methimazole).
